New for 2027 applicants: some UK universities have paused or tightened recruitment from Pakistan. Read how to choose a UK university that will issue your CAS, and if you want full funding, the Commonwealth Scholarship through HEC closes on 20 October.

£1,570a month to show for study in London, from 30 November 2026
£1,203a month to show outside London
9 monthsthe most you must show, even on a longer course
28 daysthe money must sit in the account before you apply

What exactly changed

On 3 September 2026 the UK government laid the Statement of Changes to the visa Rules HC 584. Three lines in the Student route replace the old monthly maintenance figures:

  • Studying in London: £1,529 becomes £1,570 per month
  • Studying outside London: £1,171 becomes £1,203 per month
  • Maximum: still 9 months, so the most you can be asked for in living costs is £14,130 (London) or £10,827 (outside London)
  • Start date: applications made on or after 30 November 2026

The rest of the money rule does not change. You still need your remaining first year course fees plus living costs, held for at least 28 days in a row, with the 28 day period ending no more than 31 days before you apply.

Good to know: the gov.uk page on Student visa money will keep showing £1,529 and £1,171 until the change takes effect. The new figures come from the Statement of Changes itself, which is the legal text.

British pound notes for the UK student visa funds requirement
Plan the full sterling amount early, since the rupee rate moves every week.

Which amount applies to you

The Home Office decides your application under the rules in force on the day you make it. HC 584 says that any application made before 30 November 2026 will be decided under the rules in force on 29 November 2026.

You applyLondon (per month)Outside London (per month)
On or before 29 November 2026£1,529£1,171
On or after 30 November 2026£1,570£1,203

Your application is made when you submit the online form and pay the visa fee, not when you attend your biometrics appointment. If your CAS arrives late and you cannot submit by 29 November, plan for the higher amount from the start.

Totals in pounds and rupees

These are living costs only, for a course of 9 months or longer. Add any first year tuition you have not yet paid.

Living costs for 9 monthsBefore 30 NovFrom 30 NovExtra you need
London£13,761 (about PKR 5.16 million)£14,130 (about PKR 5.30 million)£369 (about PKR 138,000)
Outside London£10,539 (about PKR 3.95 million)£10,827 (about PKR 4.06 million)£288 (about PKR 108,000)

Rupee figures use about PKR 375 per pound and are only a guide. The Home Office converts foreign currency at the OANDA rate on the date you apply, so keep a margin of at least 5 to 10 percent above the minimum in case the rupee moves during your 28 days.

A timeline for January 2027 applicants

  1. Now to mid October: accept your offer, pay any tuition deposit and ask the university when it will issue your CAS. Many universities issue January CAS in October and November.
  2. Decide your target date: if your CAS will be in hand early, you can aim to apply by 29 November and use the current figures. If not, prepare for £1,570 or £1,203 per month.
  3. Start the 28 days early: the full amount must sit in the account every single day for 28 days. For a submission on 29 November, the money must be in place by 1 November at the latest.
  4. Get the statement right: the closing date of your statement must be within 31 days of your application date, and it must show the account holder name, bank name, dates and balances.
  5. Apply and book biometrics: submit online, pay the fee (£558) and the Migration Health Surcharge, then attend VFS in Lahore, Islamabad or Karachi. Standard decisions take about 3 weeks.

Do not rush a weak file: applying on 29 November with missing documents to save £369 is a bad trade. A rejection costs you the fee, the surcharge and your January start. A strong file with the higher amount is always the better choice.

Mistakes that lead to rejection

  • Balance dips below the target for even one day during the 28 days, often because of a card payment or bank charge.
  • Using the old figure after 30 November because an agent or website has not updated its checklist.
  • Funds in a parent’s name without a birth certificate (or FRC) and a signed letter of consent from the parent.
  • Large unexplained deposits just before the 28 day period starts. Keep evidence of where the money came from.
  • Counting the wrong location: London amounts apply if your course is mainly in the London area, even when the university’s head office is elsewhere.
