Are UK Universities Still Accepting Pakistani Students for 2027? How to Choose One That Will Issue Your CAS

Yes, most UK universities still welcome students from Pakistan. But since the Home Office tightened its sponsor rules, a number of universities have paused or narrowed recruitment from Pakistan, and many now check applicants far more closely before they issue a CAS. Here is what changed, and how to pick a university that will actually sponsor you.

The short answer

Most UK universities are still recruiting Pakistani students for January and September 2027. What has changed is how carefully they choose. A university’s licence to sponsor international students now depends on how many of its applicants receive a visa, so admissions teams look much harder at every file from countries with high rates of visa rejection, and Pakistan is one of them.

For you, that means two things. First, check that the university you like is actually issuing CAS to Pakistani nationals for your intake. Second, prepare your file as if the university is the first visa officer, because in practice it now is.

How the Home Office rates a university: green below 4 per cent, amber 4 to under 5 per cent, red 5 per cent or more

Why some universities stopped recruiting from Pakistan

Every UK university that sponsors international students has to pass the Home Office’s Basic Compliance Assessment (BCA). The Home Office’s student sponsor guidance, in use from 1 June 2026, sets three core measures: a visa rejection rate below 5 per cent, an enrolment rate of at least 95 per cent and a course completion rate of at least 85 per cent.

Each measure is now rated red, amber or green. For the rejection rate, green is below 4 per cent, amber is 4 to just under 5 per cent, and red is 5 per cent or more. A university rated red for the first time is placed on an action plan for at least 12 months, receives a final warning and has its CAS allocation cut by at least 10 per cent. A second red rating during that period can lead to the loss of its sponsor licence.

Why Pakistan is affected. The Financial Times reported, using Home Office data, that 18 per cent of student visa applications from Pakistan were rejected in the year to September 2025. When one country’s rate is several times the 5 per cent limit, a university with many Pakistani applicants can see its whole rating pulled towards red.

Which universities have paused, as publicly reported

These are the pauses reported in the press. Policies change each intake, so treat this as a starting point and confirm with the university directly.

Many other universities have not paused at all but have added steps: an earlier deposit, a credibility interview, stricter checks on study gaps and funds, or a limit on which courses they will sponsor.

What universities now check before they issue a CAS

  • Your academic fit. The course should follow logically from your previous study or work. A sudden switch needs a clear, honest reason.
  • Study gaps. Gaps after your last qualification need evidence: a job letter, salary slips, a business record.
  • Funds, early. Many universities now ask to see bank statements before CAS. The money must meet the Home Office rules, including the 28 day holding period.
  • A credibility interview. Expect questions on why this course, why this university, why the UK, your costs and your plans after study. Memorised answers do badly.
  • A deposit. Usually paid before CAS. Read the refund terms if your visa is not granted.
  • English. The test and score the university accepts for visa purposes, not just for admission.

How to choose a university that will issue your CAS

  1. Ask in writing. Email the international admissions team: are you issuing CAS to Pakistani nationals for my intake and course? Keep the reply.
  2. Read the country page. Most universities have a Pakistan page listing entry requirements, representatives and any restrictions. If Pakistan is missing, ask why.
  3. Check the deposit and refund terms before paying anything, including what happens if the visa is not granted or the CAS is withdrawn.
  4. Match the course to your story. A master’s that builds on your degree or job is easier to defend at interview and with the visa officer.
  5. Have funds ready before you apply for CAS, in an account that meets the Home Office rules, held for 28 consecutive days.
  6. Prepare for the interview as seriously as for the visa itself. We run mock credibility interviews for our students.
  7. Keep one or two backups at universities with a steady record of sponsoring Pakistani students, so a pause at one does not cost you the intake.

Frequently asked questions

Are UK universities still accepting Pakistani students in 2027?

Yes, most are. Some universities have paused or narrowed recruitment from Pakistan because of the Home Office’s stricter sponsor rules, so always confirm in writing that a university is issuing CAS to Pakistani nationals for your intake.

Why did some UK universities stop taking Pakistani students?

From 1 June 2026 a university must keep its visa rejection rate below 5 per cent to pass the Home Office Basic Compliance Assessment. The Financial Times reported an 18 per cent rejection rate for Pakistani student visa applications in the year to September 2025, so some universities paused recruitment to protect their licence.

What is a CAS and why does it matter?

A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies is the reference number your university issues so you can apply for a UK Student visa. Without a CAS you cannot apply, which is why the university’s own checks now matter so much.

How much money do I need for a UK student visa from 30 November 2026?

For applications made on or after 30 November 2026: £1,570 a month in London or £1,203 a month outside London, for up to nine months, plus any unpaid tuition, held for 28 consecutive days.
