UK Graduate visa 18 months: what changes on 1 January 2027
The Graduate visa (still called the PSW or post study work visa by most people in Lahore) lets a student stay in the UK after finishing a degree, work in almost any job at any skill level, and switch to a Skilled Worker visa later. Until now it has lasted 2 years for bachelor’s and master’s graduates and 3 years for doctoral graduates.
The Home Office published a Statement of Changes on 14 October 2025 which reduces the grant to 18 months for bachelor’s and master’s graduates. The official wording on gov.uk is now: 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. Doctoral graduates are not affected and continue to receive 3 years, so the UK Graduate visa 18 months rule applies to bachelor’s and master’s graduates only.

The rule that decides everything: application date
Both gov.uk and UKCISA are clear that the cut off works on the date you apply. Three conditions must all be true on that date: you are inside the UK, you still hold a valid Student visa, and your university has told the Home Office that you successfully completed the course. You do not need your certificate and you do not need to have attended graduation.
That last condition is where students lose the 2 year version. Universities report completion in batches after exam boards meet. For a September 2025 master’s with a dissertation submitted in September 2026, many universities confirm results in October or November 2026. That leaves a narrow window. If your university runs its board late, you could miss the deadline through no fault of your own.
Three practical steps to avoid the UK Graduate visa 18 months grant
Ask for the reporting date
Ask your international student office now for the date the university expects to report your completion to UKVI.
Prepare the application in advance
Passport, the CAS number from your original application, your eVisa details, and the fee, all ready before results day.
Submit the day completion is reported
Even if that is a weekend. An application submitted on 31 December 2026 receives 2 years; one submitted on 2 January 2027 receives 18 months.
What a UK Graduate visa of 18 months means in practice
A UK Graduate visa of 18 months is enough time to find graduate level work, but only if the search starts before the course ends. In our experience with Pakistani graduates, the first six months after a master’s are spent settling, applying and interviewing. Under the 2 year grant that left 18 months of actual working time. Under the new grant it leaves about a year, and a Skilled Worker sponsor needs to be in place before the Graduate visa expires, because the Graduate visa cannot be extended.
The change also alters the cost per month of staying. The fee and the health surcharge are set out below; the surcharge is charged for each year or part year of the visa, so 18 months costs less in total but more per month of permission.

Dependants: who can stay with you
Only family members who are already in the UK as your Student dependants can switch to Graduate dependant status, plus children born in the UK during your Student or Graduate permission. Since January 2024 most taught master’s and bachelor’s students cannot bring dependants on the Student route at all, so for most new students the practical answer is that a spouse in Pakistan cannot join on the Graduate visa. The alternative most families overlook: Skilled Worker from day one
The Graduate visa is a bridge, not a destination. Time on it does not count towards settlement. The route that leads to indefinite leave to remain is the Skilled Worker visa, and a student with an eligible job offer can switch to it directly from the Student visa without ever using the Graduate visa. The UK Graduate visa 18 months change is now the planning baseline. If you are in the UK and finishing in 2026: confirm your completion reporting date and prepare the application now. Families in Pakistan choosing between September 2026 and January 2027 should pick on the strength of the course and the city, not on the Graduate visa, because both cohorts now receive 18 months. Yes. For applications made on or after 1 January 2027, bachelor’s and master’s graduates receive 18 months instead of 2 years. Applications made on or before 31 December 2026 still receive 2 years. Doctoral graduates receive 3 years in both cases.

The application fee is £937 and the Immigration Health Surcharge is £1,035 for each year or part year, so £2,070 for the 2 year grant and £1,552.50 for 18 months, before any dependants.
Can my spouse in Pakistan join me on the Graduate visa? +
Usually not. Only dependants already in the UK on your Student visa can switch, and since January 2024 most taught course students cannot bring dependants. Research degree and government scholarship students are the main exceptions.
Does time on the Graduate visa count towards settlement? +
No. Time on the Graduate visa does not count towards indefinite leave to remain. Time on a Skilled Worker visa does, which is why switching early matters.
Can I extend the Graduate visa? +
No. It cannot be extended. Before it expires you need to switch to another route, most commonly Skilled Worker.
