International PhD students pay the same domestic tuition as New Zealand citizens (~NZ$8,000 to NZ$10,500/year) rather than the international rate, saving roughly NZ$70,000 to NZ$90,000 over a PhD. In the USA, PhDs are usually fully funded, so out of pocket cost is often near zero, but that’s via funding rather than low fees.
Australia offers the strongest permanent residency pathway: a four year post study work visa for PhD graduates plus 20 skilled migration points for an Australian PhD. New Zealand also has a clear route via its three year work visa and Skilled Migrant Category. The UK’s Graduate Route and the US STEM OPT route can lead to work visas too, but Australia’s points bonus is the most direct.
The UK, Australia, and New Zealand typically run 3 to 4 years, more focused than the US model, which is usually 5 to 6 years and often includes coursework and comprehensive exams. If a shorter, research focused doctorate matters to you, the UK, Australia, or New Zealand may suit better than the USA.
