Study with familyFor married students from Pakistan, the question is no longer only which university. It is whether your husband or wife and children can come with you, and what happens after you graduate. In September 2026 Australia and New Zealand moved in opposite directions. Here is a clear comparison, with the official figures, so you can decide before you pay a deposit.
Updated 5 October 2026: Australia’s restriction on student family members came into force on 2 October 2026.
Australia. On 17 September 2026 the Home Affairs Minister announced that most international students and Temporary Graduate (subclass 485) visa holders will no longer be able to bring a partner or children. PhD students, Pacific and ASEAN nationals and family members already in Australia are exempt. The Student visa restriction came into force on 2 October 2026, with further exemptions for students sponsored by DFAT or Defence and students on a foreign government scholarship.
New Zealand. The New Zealand government (INZ) announced on 10 September 2026 that from 16 November 2026 a Level 7 Graduate Diploma will qualify for the Post Study Work Visa, if you also hold a bachelor’s degree (from New Zealand or overseas) and studied the Graduate Diploma full time in New Zealand for its full length. The visa lasts as long as you studied, up to one year. Post Study Work Visa holders can support a partner and dependent children for visitor, work or dependent child student visas.

WhatsApp +92 322 5061166New Zealand: the Partner of a Student Work Visa gives open work rights for the same length as the student’s visa. The student must be studying a Level 9 or 10 qualification (a master’s or doctorate), or a Level 7 or 8 qualification that is on the Green List or on the list of qualifications eligible for a Post Study Work Visa. Because the Graduate Diploma becomes eligible for the Post Study Work Visa from 16 November 2026, ask us to confirm the partner position for your exact programme with INZ before you enrol.
Australia: since 2 October 2026 most new students cannot include a partner or children, and family members cannot be added after the visa is granted. Applications lodged before 2 October are decided under the old rules.
Do not plan to “visit first and switch later”. Australia has also announced a “no further stay” condition on visitor visas. In New Zealand, family should apply for the right visa from the start.
