IR1 Spouse Visa After a 221(g): Allah Ditta’s Story, and What the 2026 Pause Means for Your Case
Thousands of Pakistani families waiting for US spouse visas have had a hard year. First came the January 2026 pause for 75 countries, then a worldwide pause on immigrant visa interviews in late August. In this exclusive story, we share how our client Mr. Allah Ditta turned a 221(g) on proof of relationship into an issued IR1 visa in about six weeks, and what his case teaches every family still waiting today.

Where US spouse visas stand in October 2026
Two separate pauses have affected immigrant visas this year. One has ended. The other, as far as anyone has reported, has not.

75 country pause (from January 2026)
Nationals of 75 countries, Pakistan included
Lifted. A US court set it aside on 21 August 2026 and the State Department confirmed it is no longer in effect. The government has reportedly appealed.
Worldwide pause on immigrant visa interviews (from about 25 August 2026)
Immigrant visa applicants in every country, including IR1 and CR1 spouses
Still in place, according to law firm and news reports. Consular officers are being trained on new public charge rules. No restart date has been announced.
In short: Pakistani spouses are no longer blocked because of their nationality, but most interviews worldwide are on hold until the training ends. Interviews already booked have been cancelled, and new dates are being sent by email.
How the pause affects 221(g) and administrative processing
A 221(g) is the slip a consular officer gives when they cannot decide your case at the interview. Usually it asks for more documents, or it means your file needs further checks (often called administrative processing). It is not the end of the case. For an immigrant visa, you generally have about one year to send what was asked for without paying a new fee. If nothing is sent in that time, the case can be treated as abandoned.
This year, 221(g) became much more common for Pakistani families:
Pause based 221(g) slips. While the 75 country pause was in force, many Pakistani applicants were interviewed and then held under 221(g) only because of the pause. After the court order, these cases must be reviewed, starting with the oldest. If you received one, send any missing documents within the one year window and watch your email.
Interview queue. With interviews paused worldwide, cases that were ready for interview are waiting for new dates. Your petition and your NVC file stay valid; only the date moves.
Cases already under 221(g). We have not seen an official statement on how quickly post interview 221(g) reviews will move during the training period. Expect slower decisions and keep your documents current.
New public charge checks. New public charge rules took effect on 18 September 2026. Officers will look more closely at whether the applicant could depend on US public benefits, so the US sponsor’s income, tax returns and Affidavit of Support (I 864) need to be strong and clearly documented.
Expiring documents. Long waits mean medical exams and police certificates can expire. Check their dates before your new interview.
Exclusive: how Allah Ditta got his IR1 visa after a 221(g)
Mr. Allah Ditta is married to a US citizen. His IR1 case reached the interview at the US Embassy in Islamabad in 2025. He went in with the documents he had, but the interviewing officer was not satisfied with the evidence of a genuine marriage. He left with a 221(g) slip asking for more proof of relationship.
Then life intervened. Allah Ditta travelled for Umrah, and the date given in his 221(g) letter passed before he could respond. When he came back, he was worried that his case was lost.
Mr. Allah Ditta (right) with Mujtaba Maharvi, CEO of Westside Visa Consultants, the day he collected his IR1 visa.
That is when he came to Westside. Mujtaba Maharvi, our CEO, took personal charge of the file:
Read the 221(g) letter line by line. We worked out exactly what the officer wanted and why the first set of evidence had fallen short.
Checked the timeline. Missing the date in the letter did not close the case. It was still within the one year window, so the case could be revived without a new application.
Rebuilt the relationship evidence. We organised a clear, indexed file showing a real marriage over time, rather than a pile of loose papers.
Wrote a short, professional cover letter that explained the delay honestly and mapped each document to the officer’s request.
Submitted correctly and followed up until the case moved.
About six weeks after Westside submitted the response, Allah Ditta’s IR1 visa was issued. This was in 2025, before the 2026 pauses began. Today he is living happily with his wife in the United States.

Lessons for families waiting today
A 221(g) is a request, not a final answer. Read what it asks for and answer exactly that.
A missed date is not always the end. For immigrant visas, the one year window matters most. Act as soon as you can.
Quality beats quantity. Officers want evidence that tells a clear story: your Nikah Nama and NADRA marriage certificate, photos across time and events, call and chat history over months, money sent between you, visits and travel, and family links.
Explain gaps honestly. A short, truthful cover letter is far better than silence.
Prepare for the new public charge checks now, while interviews are paused, so you are ready when your new date arrives.
Not sure how this applies to your case?
Send us your question on WhatsApp. A Westside adviser in DHA Lahore will reply, Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 18:00.
Log in to your CEAC and NVC accounts and update your email and phone number.
If your interview was cancelled, wait for the new date by email. Do not go to the embassy without one.
If you hold a 221(g), note the date on the letter and send any requested documents within one year.
Check the expiry dates of your medical exam and police certificates.
Ask your US sponsor to update income evidence and the Affidavit of Support.
Please note: the worldwide interview pause is reported by law firms and news outlets; the State Department page we checked on 6 October 2026 does not mention it. We will update this article when an official restart notice appears.

Frequently asked questions
Is the US immigrant visa pause for Pakistan lifted?
The 75 country pause that included Pakistan was lifted on 21 August 2026 after a court order. A separate worldwide pause on immigrant visa interviews for public charge training is still reported as in place, with no restart date announced.
What does a 221(g) mean on an IR1 visa?
It means the officer could not decide the case at the interview, usually because more documents are needed or further checks are required. You generally have about one year to send what was requested without a new fee.
I missed the date on my 221(g) letter. Is my case finished?
Not necessarily. For immigrant visas, the key limit is about one year from the 221(g). Send the requested documents as soon as possible with a short letter explaining the delay. Allah Ditta’s case shows it can still succeed.
What proof of relationship works best for a spouse visa?
A registered Nikah Nama and NADRA marriage certificate, photos across time, regular communication history, money sent between spouses, visits, and evidence of family involvement, organised clearly and matched to what the officer asked for.
Will my IR1 interview be rescheduled automatically?
Reports say embassies are emailing new dates once interviews restart. Keep your CEAC and NVC contact details up to date and do not go to the embassy without a new date.
