The F1 visa is the family first preference immigrant visa. In simple terms, it is for the unmarried son or daughter, aged 21 or older, of a US citizen. Once the process finishes, your child becomes a lawful permanent resident and receives a green card.
Here is the key difference from a child visa. When a child is under 21 and unmarried, they count as an “immediate relative” and travel quickly on an IR 2 visa. However, the moment they turn 21, they move into the F1 category. Unlike immediate relatives, the F1 has a yearly limit. As a result, a waiting line forms, and patience becomes part of the journey.
Before you file, check the core rules. Generally, three conditions must all be true.
That last point is the most important of all. Because if your son or daughter marries at any time before they get the visa, the case does not simply pause. Instead, it shifts into the F3 category for married children, which carries an even longer wait. So the rule is simple: stay unmarried until the journey is complete.

As of the July 2026 Visa Bulletin, the F1 line for most countries, including Pakistan, sits around a February 2018 priority date. The category receives about 23,400 visas a year. Remember, though, that the line moves over time, so your real wait may differ.
